Mission Technology

On mission day an e-mission uses the Internet and videoconferencing technology for live direct contact with e-Mission Control at the National Space Centre.

Mission Emergency Response Team

e-Mission: Operation Montserrat is aimed at Key Stage 3 students. Missions have been sucessfully performed by Year 6 students will a little assistance, and have been enjoyed by older groups as well. The mission can be differentiated to suit different abilities by using optional Excel files. The files lower the level of mathematical ability required.

Mission Overview

Your students will become science experts and participate in a unique learning experience. Linked via the Internet with e-Mission Control at The National Space Centre, they will participate in a simulated "e-Mission," confronting real-life emergency events like hurricanes and volcanic eruptions.

The National Space Centre is seaching for teachers and their students who are willing to serve as Emergency Response Teams (ERTs). ERT members learn new science skills and become experts in the field of Earth system science. As the ERT the students will work under pressure, exercise leadership, initiative, and cooperation. Each mission's success depends upon teamwork and communication.

You begin the simulation by selecting students to form the ERT. In the subsequent weeks the students engage in preparatory activities during which they collect data about emergency events, analyse the data, and learn to make logical recommendations based upon scientific analysis. Additionally there are optional extension activities designed to give the ERT cross-curricular training for the event. All of this preparation finally leads to Mission Day and the Island of Montserrat.
