Festival of Science and Culture - June 2003 Click to Print print

The first ever Festival of Science and Culture was held at the National Space Centre in Leicester on Tuesday 24th June 2003 . The Festival celebrated the contributions by the Black community to science and culture with all communities. It was designed to inspire young Black and mixed heritage people about careers in science, technology and engineering.

The world's first black astronaut, Dr Guion Bluford, launched the festival to political, business, education and media representatives. Other inspirational speakers included Karl Brown, presently the Leicester Riders Basketball team captain and X England Captain.

Dr Guion Bluford spoke to over 1000 young winners of our ‘Heroes from History' competition. The competition asked schools, youth groups and after-school study-clubs to show off their artistic and research abilities by creating a display about a person from Black history who has contributed to scientific or cultural achievements - their hero from history!

The city council's African Caribbean Working Group came up with the idea of the festival, which was in turn driven forward by the National Space Centre in partnership with the Council and the African Caribbean Citizens' Forum (ACCF).
