The National Space Centre in Leicester designated Friday 23rd May as Red Leicester Day. This action packed day marked the beginning of the “Year of Mars” and celebrated the launch of the Space Center's role in the Beagle 2 mission to the Red planet.
Red Leicester Day was the preview event of an extraordinary space mission which gave the public a unique opportunity to witness the workings of a real-life space project.
Red Leicester Day was attended by The Right Worshipful the Lord Mayor of Leicester, Mr Ramnik Kavia and the Lady Mayoress, Mrs Kavia who were joined by a host of British space experts and VIP's. The programme began with the arrival by parachute of the Red Devils followed by the release of 3000 red balloons by children of a local infant school. Three red banners, with a message to Mars designed by local school children, and sponsored by BT, were unfurled.
