There are festive traditions, like Christmas telly, minced pies and an afternoon game of Articulate, at least in my house anyway. But then there are festive experiences; the kind you talk about long after the decorations have been packed away; the new memories that go on to be referenced year after year.
Our Discovery team are going above and beyond to create just this kind of yuletide magic: a Festive Film Club screening of How The Grinch Stole Christmas like you’ve never seen before. Whether you're someone who knows every line by heart, looking to spark that nostalgic childhood joy, or just looking for things to do this December, this event promises to sweep you straight into the heart of Christmas.
To find out a bit more about this very Grinchy occasion, the team talked me through all the mischief and festive antics they have planned… although some things might have to remain secret until the day.
A Christmas Tradition with a Cosmic Upgrade
The project is led by the Discovery team powerhouses Chloe, Katie and Ed, whose love for Christmas is already legendary here at the National Space Centre. “We wanted to create something cosy and comforting,” said Chloe. “Christmas is such a whirlwind for families, so we wanted to give people a way to slow down, get wrapped up in the magic, and just enjoy the season.”
For Chloe, this film isn’t just a seasonal favourite, it's a personal tradition. “How The Grinch Stole Christmas is my absolute favourite Christmas movie,” said Chloe. “I watch it every single year, and I really wanted to share that joy in a way that feels special.”
“We’ve poured so much love into this,” Ed added. “We really wanted to hammer home that this is not just a film screening, it’s an experience. We want people to arrive and immediately feel like something magical is happening.”
A Feel-Good, Festive Escape
The team watched the movie together specifically to map out how they could amplify the mischief, magic, and mayhem of the film. And while they’re keeping their cards close to their Christmas jumpers (no spoilers here!), expect festive surprises that only the National Space Centre could possibly pull off.
“We can’t go into too much detail,” Chloe said, smiling. “We’ve got some surprises up our sleeves. We really want people to walk in and feel like they’ve stepped into Christmas. This is our chance to share something joyful, silly and heartwarming, and we really can’t wait.”
“We’ve gone a bit Christmas mad, that’s for sure,” Katie laughed. “But we’re encouraging people to get caught up in that energy with us. If you're looking for a moment to just be festive, to laugh, to relax, to remember what it feels like to be excited about Christmas, then you’re coming to the right place.”
Exclusive Treats to Sweeten the Night
And what’s Christmas without something delicious to devour while you settle in for festive fun? On the night, visitors can indulge in treats created exclusively for this event: a Christmas-themed cookie, and a gloriously green cream to go on top of our hot chocolate that feels like it’s been whipped straight out of Whoville.
Ed couldn’t be more excited about them. “We wanted the treats to feel like they’d stepped right out of the iln,” he said. “The moment you see that green cream on a hot chocolate, you just know you’re in for something special. It’s not Christmas without a little sweetness.”
These goodies are available to add during the booking process or on the night and add an extra layer of warmth and whimsy to the evening.
Come Ready to Celebrate… and be Surprised
Dressing up is highly encouraged, and the team will be going all out on the costumes this time.
“We would love to see some festive outfits on the night!” said Ed. “We’ll be in full costume, so if people want to come dressed up then we’ll be delighted….the more outrageous, the better!”
“We’ve got all sorts of antics planned, but we’re not going to reveal what they are yet,” said Katie. “Let’s just say that there will be plenty of surprises. There are things we’ve planned that will make you stop and say… ‘Oh wow, they really went for it!’”
“You don’t need Christmas spirit to attend,” Chloe says, “but we guarantee you’ll leave with it.”
