If you have ever joined us for one of our Cosmic nights out, then you will know that there is nowhere else quite like the galleries of the National Space Centre for an evening of music, memories, and something just a little bit different.
But when the idea of a Cosmic Emo night was suggested to us by a visitor, our Venue team jumped at the opportunity to make a truly unique event.
So for this Our Space, I wanted to spend some time chatting with Sandra, our Conference Organiser and Host and lifelong Alternative music fan, to find out more about the event. Plus, our special guest band Just a Phase joined in to help me find out more about the night, what to expect, and just why this music is so special.
What is Cosmic Emo?
Cosmic Emo is a night filled with Emo anthems, live music and good times. Held in our galleries and underneath our iconic rockets, it will be a night out to relive the golden years of Emo loud and proud. There will be hard shakes, themed cocktails, a live set from Just a Phase, Emo karaoke and even a DJ set.
“The idea came straight from a visitor,” Sandra told me. “After a previous Cosmic event, we asked for feedback from the attendees. One of the responses we got said why not hold an Emo night? We are really invested in feedback here, and we always try to follow-through on suggestions where we can. So as soon as I saw this comment I knew I had to make it happen.”
And as a lover of Rock and Metal music, she was the ideal person to make this dream become reality. “Even from a young age, I was into bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam”, she said. “Then I moved on to Nu-Metal like Korn and Slipknot, before eventually landing on My Chemical Romance, Paramore, The All-American Rejects, We the Kings, Panic at the Disco, Fall Out Boy, etc. So this is my scene, and the chance to develop an event that’s centred around it is just mind-blowing to me.”
What to Expect on the Night
The event promises to be a night out to remember, with wall-to-wall Emo smashers being played both live and throughout the Centre. But it will also be a welcoming space for every adult who is either still an alt-kid at heart, or a loyal follower of the scene.
“It’s going to be an evening filled with nostalgia for me,” says Sandra. “Emo and Alternative never really went away, but for many of us it has a deep tie to our formative years. That period where we were coming-of-age. That music stayed with me forever, and whenever I listen to it I’m instantly 15-years-old again.”
“But also,” Sandra continues, “there’s a real revival in this type of music at the moment, so it’s open to anyone who wants to explore this type of music; even people who just want a night out and aren’t lifelong Emos but just fancy something a bit different. We really believe in #SpaceForEveryone here, and that means everyone; Elder Emos, Metalheads, Alt-kids, Grungers, Greebos, Goths… whatever you call yourself, there’s a place here at the National Space Centre for you.”
Meet the Band: Just a Phase
Providing the soundtrack are Just a Phase, a local band of five musicians brought together by a shared love of Kerrang!, MTV2 and Scuzz.
“We felt that something was missing in the local scene,” the band told me. “We wanted the big Emo anthems from the MySpace era. So at the end of 2024, the five of us came together and formed the band. We didn’t know each other, but we had all played instruments and been in bands since our teens. Our shared passion for the anthems of our youth really brought us together. Despite our name, our goal is to prove it was never just a phase!”
More Than Just The Music
“Emo is the gateway to so much more,” say Just a Phase. “It provided an alternative sound and look when we were young. We made our best friends through this scene. And most importantly, it has the best lyrics of any genre!“
“I used to love walking through my town and spotting people who were dressed the same as me,” Sandra agreed. “It really felt like you were part of something, whether that was through the Emo fashions and hairstyles, or bands, of that kind of sub-culture. It’s how I made some of my closest friends. And now people are getting to experience that for the first time. So that’s exactly the kind of vibe we wanted to create with Cosmic Emo.”
